Chapter Twenty-Eight

Grant

If I went into Mel’s house with her, I’d struggle to tear myself away. I hungered for her like a starving dog hungered for raw meat. She still had a boyfriend, and I had emails I needed to attend to.

“I won’t stay,” I said, “but thank you.” We reached her front door, and she smiled up at me. It would be so easy to take her in my arms and kiss the fuck out of her, but I could resist a little longer. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Mel searched my face, and then nodded. “See you in the office.” She placed one hand on my cheek and gazed deep into my eyes. “Please don’t be an asshole again.”

It was tempting to rub against her palm, but I didn’t. She wasn’t playing, this time. That was genuine vulnerability on her face. “Not to you,” I said. I wasn’t promising to be pleasant to anyone else.

“I have to go,” I told her. Why was leaving so difficult? This thing between us was an uncharted continent for me. I had to figure it out one step at a time.

“Goodnight, Grant.” She released me but didn’t move.

“Give me your key.”

“Why?” She dug into a pocket for it, and handed it to me.

I reached behind her and used it to open her door, before giving it back. “Goodnight, Mel.”

At the last moment, before she stepped across the threshold, she leaned in and pressed a featherlight kiss on my cheek. “G’night.”

The door closed. I touched my cheek where her lips had landed. That was Mel, all over. I had to expect the unexpected.

I smiled all the way back to my hotel.

When I checked my email before dinner, I found a reply from the about-to-open Sunset Palms hotel. Their official opening date was at the end of the month, but as long as I agreed to make the wedding pictures available for future publicity purposes, I could hire the entire venue at the weekend. Their staff would welcome the opportunity for a practice run at an event.

It wouldn’t be cheap and was probably well out of Annika’s budget, but it was a drop in the ocean for me. It would be my way of saying thank you for her hospitality on Saturday. Before I made the booking and paid the deposit, I needed to check that the venue would work for her. It wasn’t even ten o’clock yet. Not too late to call Mel.

“Hi.” She sounded surprised—pleased?—to take my call. “What’s up?”

“Is Annika there with you?”

“Yes. Is this going to be the sort of call where I need to shut myself in the bedroom, to have some privacy?”

I laughed. “I like where your mind is going, but no. I want to talk to her about the wedding venue. I’ve found an alternative, but I don’t want to book it until she’s given her approval.”

There was silence. Then a rustling noise. “I’ve put you on speaker. You say you’ve found another venue for her? That’s amazing. Where?”

“I’m here,” said Annika.
